Football fever is beginning to set in as the final preparations are being made for June’s World Cup in South Africa. But if it’s not quite warm enough to head out to the fields just yet, you can indulge your football cravings at one of Beirut’s indoor football fields. Since we never recommend something we haven’t already tried out ourselves, our Time Out editorial staff headed over to HOOPS Club, in Beirut, to play a game of five-aside football.
Coming straight from the office, admittedly we were inappropriately clad – normally the club requires those who rent a surface to wear athletic gear (no cleats allowed however, as they can damage the playing surface). Nevertheless, our team of misfits made the most of it and we ended up having a ball (no pun intended).
On entering the club, visitors are greeted by large basketball and football courts filled with Beirut’s athletic types working up a sweat. Plus, there’s a café bordering the playing areas, so that friends and parents can grab a snack while they watch you play.
Heading over to our Astroturf field (the club also has a rubber court and an acrylic court, should you prefer), we picked up two footballs, provided by HOOPS, and the game was on. With six goal posts surrounding the field, we had the option of playing on a half court, but instead opted for playing out our match on the full field. Of course, we’re hardcore players.
