Ou Ali Mama3ou Khabar’ (‘And Ali has no idea’) is a solo exhibition by acclaimed contemporary artist Zena el Khalil-inspired by the pink flyers dropped over Beirut by the Israelis during the 2006 war. Some were political caricatures which Zena found herself collecting and doodling on. Her work is always colourful, filled with acrylic, glitter, artificial flowers and toy soldiers or keffiyehs and fake pearls – each element conveying the diversity of the Lebanese capital while contributing to her themes of violence and gender. Author of ‘Beirut, I Love You’, Khalil’s novel, installations, mixed media works, performances and blog all highlight her fascination with the city. If you love Beirut as much as she does, this exhibition deserves a visit.
‘Ou Ali Mama3ou Khabar’ runs until Aug 13 at Espace Kettaneh Kunigk (01 738706, 03 798081) Gefinor Center, Block E, Hamra. Mon-Fri 11am-7pm; Sat 11am-5pm.
