Organized by Solidere and Meem Gallery and curated by Dia Al-Azzawi and Charles Pocock, the exhibition ‘Art in Iraq Today’ features the works of Iraqi artists with varying working methodologies. The group of artists are united in their experience of exile. One of the main objectives of the exhibition was to highlight the talent that still exists today among contemporary Iraqi artists despite their unfortunate circumstances.
The display includes works by Modhir Ahmed, Dia Al-Azzawi, Amar Dawod, Ghassan Ghaib, Ali Jabbar, Halim Al-Karim, Nedim Kufi, Hanaa Malallah, Rafa Al-Nasiri, Mahmoud Obaidi, Kareem Risan, Delair Shaker, Ali Talib, and Nazar Yahya.
Given that these artists spent their formative years in Iraq, and have been profoundly shaped by the experience, this along with their experience of exile is a sobering testament to what Iraqi contemporary art could have been today.
