We are very happy to announce the appointment of Marie Muracciole as the new director of Beirut Art Center, effective March 15, 2014.
This board nomination resulted from an arduous and intensive vetting process after an international call for candidates was announced. Likewise, our decision to step down from our position as Co-Directors was very carefully considered. Since the founding of Beirut Art Center, it was our desire to create an institution which sustained itself on the dynamism of its structure rather than the singular efforts of one, or in our case, two individuals. As such, it was our intention to serve as Co-Directors for a limited period of time required to establish such a structure.
In launching BAC, and overseeing the first five years of its growth, we have had the great fortune of working with a diverse array of artists, curators, architects and designers, journalists, and cultural practitioners, all of the highest caliber. We extend our sincerest and utmost gratitude for their contribution to BAC. We also wish to thank BAC’s funders for their generous support and their trust, without which this project and the continuous activities of the center would not be possible.
We relinquish our duties as Co-Directors not with sadness, but excitement for the coming tenure of Marie Muracciole, whose curatorial project, rich experience, dynamic approach, and human qualities are sure to invigorate the programming at BAC. As we remain active members of the board, we look forward to collaborating with her.
Marie Muracciole is an art historian, art critic, and independent curator. She was Head of the Cultural Department at Jeu de Paume from 2006 until 2011, and since then has curated group and solo shows in several institutions and art centers both regionally, as well as in Europe and the USA. Her writings and collaborations with artists like Allan Sekula and Yto Barrada are representative of her highly engaging curatorial practice.
On behalf of the board, and entire team at Beirut Art Center, we extend our warm and enthusiastic welcome to Marie Muracciole, wishing her all the very best in this new position.
