Last night a DVD saved my life

Rola Yasmine takes a break from her work at the feminist collective Nasawiya to share her DVD secrets with Time Out.

How many DVDs have you got?

Around 200.

You, a desert island and one DVD. Which is it?
‘Tropic Thunder’. A brilliant movie and a fine choice of entertainment if I was stuck on an island.

What DVDs have most influenced you?
'The Hours’, ‘Iron Jawed Angels’, ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, ‘The World According to Garp’, ‘La vita è Bella’ and ‘Quills’.

What’s the most embarrassing DVD in your collection?
I’m not ashamed of my movies, although some might say I should be with my obsession with Disney classics. Highly recommended are ‘Mulan’, ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘A Goofy Movie’, ‘Pocahontas’, ‘Jungle Book’... you see where I’m going with this?

Are there any rare, obscure or just plain weird DVDs you’d recommend to Time Out readers?
‘Oldboy’ from the Vengeance triology.

What was the last DVD you cried to?
‘A Single Man’.

What DVD would you like pulled from circulation?
‘Scary Movie’.

Describe your perfect night in with a DVD.
Watching a classic (‘Casablanca’, ‘Gone with the Wind’, ‘La Môme’, ‘His Girl Friday’, ‘When Harry Met Sally’) with an awesome bottle of red wine, alone in my getaway home, on my rocking chair, with my cigarettes. No distractions.
