Get down with the funk this summer and watch the sun rise from Beirut’s newest rooftop addition
We all know summer is the season the birds of Beirut migrate to the city’s rooftops – seems the climate is a little breezier up there – and to help with overpopulation issues, another rooftop destination is soon to open above the highway. The name is ‘Funktion’, but this building-topper attempts to set itself apart from the sit-and-stare standard of clubs that consider eyeing up the crowd entertainment. Funktion aspires to offer the ultimate in party-till-you-drop experience, with a more than decent menu to keep your ‘party-machine’ fuelled.

Greeting guests with an infinity pool as the elevator ascends, Funktion radiates like a stadium from the focal point –- an enormous island bar (an open invitation to bar flies?) surrounded by striking stools in gold and white, the running colour theme of the venue. Step up from the bar area, and you’ll find the VIP area with white leather couches, the perfect place to people watch. If that’s not exclusive enough, request a canopy and close the curtains on your private party.

For a rooftop setting, prices are not exorbitant. The minimum charge of LL75,000 per person isn’t cheap, but comes far from topping Beirut’s priciest rooftops. A beer will set you back a not completely unreasonable LL10,000, cocktails are LL15,000 and a premium bottle LL300,000. The special sake cocktail goes perfectly with the international Asian-themed cuisine. DJs play the traditional commercial, house and RnB mix, with a British dance team to get the crowd going.
