‘Hamletmachine’ was German playwright Heiner Müller’s attempt to decode Shakespeare’s legendary play, a process which saw 191 out of the original 200 pages erased. The result, depending on who you ask, was nine pages of obscure, postmodernist ramble or a work of genius that defined a generation of East German intellectuals disillusioned with the Big Brother State.
Last year Beirut’s Zoukak Theatre Company adapted Müller’s vision into Arabic. A captivating and thought-provoking piece of theatre, the Time Out office is delighted to see it return to the stage again this September.
Transcending the existential themes of Hamlet, the play sets out to explore the complex relationship between man, culture and history.
