The Beirut heat and humidity can leave your complexion craggier than Mount Lebanon. Never fear, the Time Out team has tracked down the country’s best facial treatments for some pure, pore-pampering indulgence.
Diamond Microdermabrasion
Forget partying, Beirut summers mean only one thing for me: acne. Diamond microdermabrasion’s advanced exfoliation techniques (yes, they really do use diamonds) zap away a layer of dead skin cells, leaving behind skin that twinkles rather than shines, and is less likely to clog your complexion. I’m happy to be left in Silkor’s capable hands for such a heavy-duty treatment, who take away the surgical feel with a relaxing, distracting massage. Ultimate pleasure? Seeing the removed grime and grease satisfyingly gathered up in a cotton ball.
Result: Like I’ve had a ‘Face/Off ‘ with Scarlett Johansson. Sparkling. Natasha Dirany. $75 for 45 mins. Silkor (01 291155, 70 111115) Verdun. Other branches available.
Deep Cleaning Facial
The Grand Hills Spa’s technician, Julie, starts by assessing your skin type to recommend the treatment most suitable for your case. The deep cleaning facial progresses as follows: a gentle scrub, peeling and steam followed by a face, neck and upper chest/shoulders massage. Then comes the extraction, mask and final coat of hydrating cream to create a holistic – and entirely edible – facial. It might have been close to lunchtime but the aromas of the cream and the chocolate-scented paint on the walls were scrumptiously appetising.
Result: Bright, firm skin that looked even better the next morning. Jade George. $150 for 60mins. Grand Hills Spa (04 868444) Grand Hills Village, Broummana.
Caviar Anti-Wrinkle Facial
A clear serum, a mixture of caviar extract and botulin (a relative of Botox treatments), is rubbed into my thoroughly cleansed skin, and an eye treatment is added for my dark circles. The pièce de résistance – a pink tissue mask infused with more caviar extract – is sprayed with an activating ingredient to work on my fine lines for ten minutes – it feels heavy and damp, and very rich. It’s followed up with a calming T-zone regulator and brightening cream.
Result: I can’t tell if my emergent wrinkles have been relieved, but my skin is brighter, and feels suitably luxuriated. Ellen Hardy. $45 for 50 mins. Victory Spa (09 796797, 70 104349) South of Byblos, Coastal Road.
Steamed Rice Facial
Who said rice was for cooking? Sense’s spa team use their own Bali-imported in-house organic products for this derma-revitalising treatment. My skin’s is cleansed with rice milk, followed by a rice toner and scrub. Unsightly blackheads and whiteheads are extracted and a toner is applied. Boulus’s packed with steamed rice are brushed in circular movements over my face, leaving a layer of soft rice water, which is left to set as a mask while I’m given a soothing hand massage. Remover, toner and a finishing facial crème (again, all rice-based) finish off – it all takes just over an hour.
Result: Fresh and rejuvenating, this is great for all skin types. Rebecca Chemaly. $60 for 60 mins. Senses (09 213212, 09 223212) Kaslik beach road, Kaslik.
